The newsroom staff at The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa invites you to apply for an annual scholarship supporting students in Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino and Napa counties interested in pursuing journalism and related fields in college and beyond.
Winners will be selected on the basis of the student’s ability and promise as a journalist, interest shown in journalism programs and financial need.
Richard Torkelson, a reporter and editor at The Press Democrat, exemplified the ideals of journalism. His 1971 death in an auto accident while on assignment led his friends and associates to establish a scholarship fund to help journalism students.
The fund, administered by The Press Democrat Guild, has awarded scores of scholarships over more than five decades, helping young journalists pursue their educational and career goals.
